Should I Wear Waterproof Liquid Foundation Every Day?

March 09, 2023

Our summer season is officially in complete swing, and with the advent of this sweaty, hot season come to some special challenges for keeping your makeup looking charming and refreshed. Many people seek to swap out regular formulas for waterproof versions of their preferred products that can hold up against sweat, water, humidity, and even your sister’s wedding. What makes that waterproof liquid mascara stick to your lashes like superglue? How can a waterproof liquid foundation remain steadfast through many dips in a vacation hot tub? Let’s look at the special features of waterproof makeup and what makes it different from traditional makeup products.

The waterproof difference

“Waterproof” refers to skincare and makeup products mainly formulated to resist moisture and remain in place when exposed to water. Waterproof formulas can have ingredients that give them adhesive properties so they can stick to lips, brows, lashes, and skin. The degree of waterproofing changes from product to product. Some brands are intended for little periods of water or moisture exposure, such as sweating or crying. Others can be so highly sticky that they withstand laps in a swimming competition. You pick the coverage and long-lasting wearing features you need for your daily activities.

Waterproof liquid foundation and makeup composition

Many firms that manufacture waterproof makeup use a mixture of the following ingredients to create formulas that look best, resistant moisture, and stay in place until you remove them.

Film former

A film former is the most famous type of waterproof ingredient. These synthetic molecules include silicones, acrylamides, PVP, arcylates and copolymers. All these elements make an adhesive cover over the surface that they are applied to, which locks in the cosmetic and helps to save it from water erosion.

Silicone

Silicone is a specific kind of film added to an item to help water bead and roll off the skin. Those with sensitive skin should consider steering clear of silicones, as they can be comedogenic, the reason for skin breaks out. Silicones can also irritate skin and can cause allergic responses. If you are not sure whether an item containing silicone will work for you, patch test it on a little, inconspicuous area of the skin to determine if it is safe for your skin.

Wax

Natural, plant based waxes are the best option for making products long-lasting without exposing the eyes or skin to bad chemicals. Plant waxes easily make a water-resistant barrier. Proof of this is found in nature on the leaves of the plant from which they get harvested.

Polymers

A polymer works to make a coating on an item to save it from water intrusion. Polymers are special and different from film formers because they evaporate over time. An item containing polymers would not be “waterproof” but long-wearing. Sensitive and delicate skin generally reacts well to polymers rather than film formers.

Dimethicone

Diemethicone is a silicone-based polymer included in makeup items to keep them from sliding off when exposed to water. Dimethicone is the most volatile of these additives, being a famous skin sensitizer that has potentially toxic complications for the body and the atmosphere. Generally, the longer and more vigorously item resistant moisture; the more potentially bad it is for our skin. Pick your items and ingredients carefully, mainly if you have sensitive skin.

Who benefits most from waterproof liquid foundation?

A waterproof foundation formula is perfect for you if you:

·         Live in a damp climate and find that your makeup slides off immediately.

·         Are a performer or athlete and want to look fresh during recitals, sports events, etc.

·         Live in a rainy climate and are not forever armed with a hood or umbrella

·         Work outdoors or close to the water and have minimal chance to reapply makeup or check your complexion.

·         Are a spontaneous or adventurous person and want a foundation that can keep up with whatever your day has planned for you?

If none of these statements explains your environment or lifestyle, a waterproof foundation probably is not a daily necessity. But if your skin is well-balanced and flawless, go right ahead and use whatever foundation jobs best for you.

Removing liquid waterproof foundation

If you do use a waterproof foundation daily, you need the right makeup remover. Your regular skin cleanser would not remove residue and will leave you sad. An oil-based remover will break up your makeup the most successfully. But don’t hesitate about putting oil on your face, oils in makeup removers are not left on the skin for extremely long. Regardless of your skin type, you forever need to follow your general cleanser once the foundation is removed. Trying to use your regular cleanser to get rid of waterproof makeup is problematic for your wallet and face for reasons you would not quickly expert. You will need to use a ton of cleanser, meaning you will run out sooner. Additionally, using more detergents than necessary on the skin can be destroying and super-drying. Overall, an oil-based makeup remover is best.

Most general types of waterproof liquid makeup

1. Mascara

Mascara was considered the OG of waterproof makeup items, still ranking up in fame and demand. Unfortunately, these formulas take a lot of work and development to get rid of. Wearing waterproof mascara daily will result in lashes that break, brittle, and fall out.

2. Foundation

A waterproof liquid foundation is a sticky item that adheres to the face and can only be gotten rid of with unique cleansers. Many of these formulas are occlusive, forming a moisture-proof barrier on the skin that tears, sweat, or water cannot simply penetrate.

3. Lipstick

An amazing waterproof lipstick provides long-lasting colour in a formula that stays put. Many blends of waterproof lipstick are infused with primer oils to provide them more power. The more long-lasting the procedure, the more likely it is to be matte, which may disappear for those who love a moist, glossier look.

4. Eyeliner

Amazing waterproof eyeliner can help you reject dark circles around the eyes that form when your makeup mixes with your skin's natural oils. Waterproof eyeliner and other kinds of eye makeup can be particularly risky for sensitive eyes.
